CHILD SAFETY

Additional Information

Understanding Child Sexual Abuse

Child sexual abuse is a serious violation of a child’s safety, dignity, and rights. Awareness and prevention begin with understanding what abuse can look like, recognising unsafe situations, and creating an environment where children can speak without fear.

Warning Signs

Changes in behaviour, fear, withdrawal, sudden emotional distress, unexplained injuries, or changes in online behaviour may sometimes indicate that a child is experiencing difficulty or harm. Awareness of possible warning signs can help adults respond sensitively and seek appropriate professional assistance.

Grooming

Grooming involves building trust or emotional connections with a child with the intention of exploiting or abusing them. It can occur both offline and online. Understanding common grooming patterns can help parents, educators, and children identify potentially unsafe behaviour.

Online Child Safety

Children spend an increasing amount of time online, making digital safety an important part of child protection. We provide awareness on privacy, online communication, cyberbullying, inappropriate content, grooming, exploitation, and safe digital practices.

Prevention

Child safety requires more than responding after an incident. Prevention involves awareness, open communication, safe environments, responsible supervision, safeguarding policies, and teaching children age-appropriate information about boundaries and seeking help.

What To Do If A Child Discloses Abuse?

When a child discloses abuse, the response of an adult can be extremely important. The child should be listened to calmly, taken seriously, protected from further harm, and connected with appropriate professional and legal support. Adults should avoid blaming, intimidating, or repeatedly questioning the child.

Resources & Support

Our resources section brings together information that can help parents, children, educators, and institutions identify appropriate sources of support and protection.
